Sustainable Fashion Takes Over The Oscars Red Carpet

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Oscars 2020 – Hollywood’s biggest, most glamorous night opened its gates to non-english cinema, by awarding South Korean film Parasite the best picture. Making a stronger statement were a horde of celebrities spotted in sustainable clothing at the Oscars red carpet, creating ripples among their followers about the value in repeating clothes, the importance of reducing one’s carbon footprint, and more.

Sustainability – the top fashion trend at Oscars 2020

A celebrity repeating an outfit was considered a fashion faux pas not too long ago, but a host of celebrities walking on the Oscars 2020 red carpet re-wore previous outfits. In line with Vue’s 2020 Fashion Trend Report, sustainability made a big appearance –

1 – Margot Robbie attended Oscars 2020 wearing a vintage Chanel dress. The strapless gown with a jewel pendant and detached cuff sleeves was featured on Chanel’s Spring 1994 Haute Couture collection.

2 – Jane Fonda and Elizabeth Banks repeated glamorous gowns to emphasize the ‘importance of sustainability in fashion and consumerism as it relates to climate change.’

3 – Joaquin Phoenix, who took home the Best Actor awards for Joker, chose to wear the same Stella McCartney tuxedo that he wore in the previous awards of the season – Golden Globes, the Critics’ Choice Awards, the SAG Awards, and the BAFTAs. This sartorial choice saved 344.4 pounds of carbon, and more importantly, stamped the importance of measured consumerism amid his cult followers.

4 – Saiorse Ronan, Olivia Colman, and Kaitlyn Dever wore new outfits, but championed sustainability by wearing gowns made of environment-friendly, recycled fabrics.

Other fashion trends at Oscars 2020

It was hard to miss the ruffled peplum detailing of Saoirse Ronan’s sustainable Gucci dress. The Lady Bird actress was among the Hollywood A-listers who dominated the red carpet in ruffles, frills, and fringes.

Kristen Wigg’s red Valentino Haute Couture dress presented the ruffles trend in an intrinsic manner. Rooney Mara, elegantly blended her love for sheer with lace and frills, courtesy Alexander McQueen’s black gown. Mara’s Oscars 2020 look embodied the biggest trends – ruffles, lace, monochromatic dressing – previewed at the Milan and Paris fashion weeks.

Janelle Monae was a vision in her Ralph Lauren gown. A true labour of love, the A-line hooded, long-sleeved gown was embossed with 168,000 Swarovski crystals that took 600 hours to make!

Brie Larson looked radiant in her baby pink cape Celine dress that was bedecked in over 110,000 glass beads, 120,000 sequins, and 6,500 pink strassed jewels. Other stars who sported the high shine look were Rebel Wilson in custom-made Jason Wu sparkly golden gown, Maya Rudolph in orange sequined Valentino caftan dress, Renée Zellweger in glimmering one-shoulder Armani Prive gown.
